Do you want to resign? This is what you should know

There can be many reasons why you want to resign from your position. Maybe you want new challenges, want to try a different industry, move to a new city or maybe something completely different.

No matter what, it is important to resign in a good way that corresponds with the collective agreement or law to which you are subject. Therefore we recommend that you consider the following points.

Know your rights

If you wish to resign your position you should get informed on your terms of employment, and which collective agreement or law you are employed under. If you are for example a salaried employee, you will be covered by the rights of the Salaried Employees Act which states that you can resign your job within the current month plus one month notice no matter your seniority. If you are employed under a collective agreement your terms of resignation will be written there.

What should be included in the notice of termination?

The termination does not need to contain anything other than the statement that the employment agreement is terminated from today’s date with the applicable notice of termination. It is a good idea to ask for a written confirmation from your employer, so that there is evidence for the termination.

Reconciliation of conditions during and after the notice period

How do you handle your accrued vacation days and time off days? What salary conditions apply during the notice period? And what about bonuses, supplements and benefits – do they continue unchanged after termination?

When you resign from your position, it is important to have clear agreements between you and your employer regarding a number of things during and after the termination period. Therefore, check the rules in your collective agreement or in the Civil Service Act, if you are covered by it. You can also ask your employer for a description of the conditions you are subject to during the notice period.

Exit on a good note

If you are in doubt about who will take over your tasks and how the transfer will take place, ask your employer. If you, for example, have been a link between the company and external business partners, it is important to clarify with the business partner that they will have a new contact person. Exactly how this information should be transferred is a good idea to coordinate with your employer.

Are you an employer?

As an employer, there are a number of conditions you should be aware of when resigning an employee. You can read more about them in our blog post here.
